Named after a rapid transit terminal in Bangkok, Silom Station is a new eatery bringing unique fare and drinks to Sugar Land. Operated by the Thai Cottage group, it offers freshly crafted espresso drinks from Sit N Sip Coffee Brewer and food from Dunch Thai Eatery. Located at 222 Highway 6 in The Crossing at Telfair shopping center, this integrated coffee shop and restaurant is casual and modern. Comfortable chairs for lounging fill the center of the space, while tables better suited for enjoying a meal of Thai street fare — inspired by the Bangkok’s Silom District — line the outer edges of the room.
Customers can start their days with freshly brewed coffee and pastries from Sit N Sip and Thai breakfast items from Dunch, such as Siamese Pan Fried Egg with chicken, sweet chicken sausage, chicken bologna and green onions. The two other breakfast choices are grilled pork skewers and Massaman Curry and Croissant
Both the dinner and lunch menus are available all day, thus the name, Dunch. It offers an array of soups, salads, noodle dishes and combo plates, which are billed as a “Dunch Set” and come with a starter, a dessert and a choice of protein — chicken, pork, beef, shrimp or fried tofu.
On a recent lunchtime visit with my daughter, we started with the pan-fried chive pancake, which is served with a spicy, black soy sauce. It had a crisp exterior with a soft, savory, garlic-flavored interior. For entrées, I selected the Chili Basil with Shrimp from the Dunch Set menu and she ordered the Massaman Curry with Beef. Both were served with steamed rice, a small house salad with two fried shrimp as the starter and a small cup of fruit for dessert. My Chili Basil Shrimp was a perfect size for one and its large portion of green beans and bell peppers felt very healthy. My daughter’s curry dish was delicious, though more hearty with enough large chunks of meat that she took some home for lunch the following day.
My next visit was at dinnertime with my husband. We started with and Golden Wontons and an order of sate chicken, which came with peanut sauce. Filled with a thin layer of ground, marinated chicken, then deep-fried, the wontons were a crunchy delight, served with sweet and sour sauce. However, the sate chicken seemed unevenly cooked and we would not order it again. I have my eye on the Curry Puff and the Fried Fish Ball to try when I visit next.
For his main course, my husband ordered the pad see ew from the Dunch Set menu, which is his go-to entrée at Thai restaurants. He was pleased with this rendition. Since I was eating lighter that evening, I opted for a house salad and a bowl of tom yum soup with shrimp. The salad was a generous portion for $6 and contained a mix of lettuce, avocado, cucumber, onions, corn and tomatoes with a choice of three dressings: honey lemon, Thai vinaigrette or peanut. I opted for the peanut. The tom yum was peppery and zesty, with a spicy lime broth, lemongrass, cilantro and mushrooms.
With the unique Thai breakfast offerings and the fresh espresso drinks, Silom Station will be a welcome addition for those seeking early-morning sustenance. The numerous healthy options, along with the tasty snacks, should attract both a lunch crowd and families looking for an early dinner.
Silom Station has a casual, relaxed atmosphere that invites you to hang out but it is also easy to order food to take home by calling (281) 340-0707 or by ordering online. All of the food is served on heavy paper plates or bowls. Beverages beyond coffee include a mix of bottled soft drinks, teas and water. Silom Station is open Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
