Popular NYC Thai Restaurant, Wondee Siam, Coming to Jersey City

Popular New York City restaurant, Wondee Siam, will be opening its doors in Jersey City soon. The Asian and Thai eatery is taking over the spot that has been vacant next to Porta at 137 Newark Avenue. Read on to learn more about Wondee Siam and the sought-after dishes that are on the “secret” menu.

Wondee Siam New York City

Wondee, which has been in business for more than 25 years, is described as a “cozy hole-in-the-wall” restaurant located in Hell’s Kitchen at 792 9th Avenue in New York, NY. It is known as “one of the most popular spots for Thai delivery in Manhattan and is even one of the hottest spots for takeout in the entire city,” according to Uber Eats. The reviews prove its popularity, given the ratings are stellar {it has a 4.5 rating on Trip Advisor and 4.6 on Google Reviews}.

One person wrote, “This place is a hidden gen. Definitely worth a visit. Authentic fresh food A+++ Very small restaurant but service was great. Very reasonably priced,” while another commented, “I’ve been a regular customer for years and go nearly every week. Every time I go there are Thai customers there. They have the famous ‘secret menu’ which are very authentic Thai dishes. The service is wonderful, they really make you feel at home and the prices are very reasonable. Try the ‘Shrimp in Love’ – delicious!”

Only time will tell how closely the Jersey City location mimics the NYC one. We do know the well-liked restaurant is taking over the same spot where the previous Thai restaurant, Sawadee, has been in operation since the summer of 2008. It unexpectedly closed at the end of 2019, making it one of Newark Avenue’s longest-running restaurants. Now, passersby can see a “Coming Soon Wondee Siam From NYC” sign displayed on Sawandee’s storefront, and Hoboken Girl has learned it is currently undergoing renovations in preparations for Wondee taking over.

Sneak Peek of the Menu

The diverse menu has endless options and is vegetarian friendly and includes vegan and gluten-free options. There’s so much to choose from, any patron that enters should be able to find something to satisfy his or her taste buds.

Appetizers include three-piece curry puffs, beef and chicken sate pieces, tod man pla, and fried tofu. Some entrees include pad gra prow, pad woon sen, pad gra tiam, pad khing, and spicy bamboo among other items. Chef’s specials include crispy pork with Chinese watercress, crispy pork basil, BBQ chicken, mincemeat basil, and more.

Restauranters can also find a selection of duck dishes, fish/red snapper, soft shell crab, salmon, and other seafood dishes. There are various soups, noodle soups, fried rice, pan fried noodles, vegetables, and salads – plus curry items {green, red, panang, massaman, and country-style curry pastes}. Our mouths are already watering, and we hear there is even a “secret menu,” which is written in Thai and features specialties.

What’s To Come

If the Jersey City location is anything like the New York City one, locals can expect Wondee to be open late at night, given it closes at 11PM — seven days a week. Delivery service is available with Grubhub, Seamless, and Uber Eats.

While there is no official opening date yet for the New Jersey location, make sure to follow us to stay in-the-know on its opening and other Jersey City restaurants opening nearby such as Artichoke Pizza, and vegan restaurant Gaia and Loki. Please note Wondee Siam does not have any social media accounts and does not have a working website.
